DIY PTTL Macro Flash

I was trying to figure a way to get PTTL flash for macro shots, without paying $300.00 + dollars for a flash.
I decided to try an extendable tube to bring the flash out to the end of the lens.
The part of the tube that hooks to the built in pop up flash, is 1.5" X 1.5" X 5". I cut the one end to match the angle of the flash head. There are two small cutouts to account for the widing of the flash. I took a paper clip and after straightning, put it through the tube. I then bent the ends to make hooks for the rubberband that would hold the unit in place. The inside has tinfoil glued to it for better reflectivity.
The second part of the tube was made to be a slide on fit with tinfoil on it's inner surface too. The lens end was cut to a 45 degree angle. I then fitted a piece of translucent plastic to act as a diffuser.
I can now adjust the length to match that of the lens at any focus distance.

Very neat - and €300 richer. What do you estimate is the power output? It might be interesting to try to make a ring flash on a similar basis, maybe even fibre optics?
